Excitement ignited around the world as cyclists hit the road for the Tour de France in July 2009, marking the largest digital event of the year for major online sports network, Versus. The optimal and dynamic viewing experience was made possible by the conglomerate effort of Versus, Adobe, and Level 3.
Level 3 was tasked with streaming live footage from France into the United States, and wanted to take on that challenge by providing an end to end solution from creation to consumption. “One of the unique things about Level 3 is that we had control over the end to end support model, so we had dedicated resources that had the relationships before the event even started with all of those vendors to make sure they were available when they were needed,” said Aaron Diaz, event management director at Level 3.
This was the first time the Tour de France has ever been streamed in its entirety live online, and a landmark event for all three companies involved. “We wanted to make the Tour de France a showcase for event content delivery and interaction on the Internet, and we succeeded.”
